BEAMA (British Electrotechnical and Allied Manufacturers Association)

BEAMA has been established for over 100 years, covering a range of industries in the electrical, energy, water and power related sectors. Over the last 2 years BEAMA has worked with key players in the heat pump industry in the UK. BEAMA works with government to ensure that ground and air source heat pumps remain high on the renewable agenda, and that key regulatory building blocks are in place to ensure a sustainable future within the heat pump industry. The Government now recognises Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps as a renewable and sustainable source of heat, progressively saving carbon over time.

Heat Pump Association

The Heat Pump Association (HPA) is one of the UK's leading authority on the use and benefits of heat pump technology and includes many of the country's leading manufacturers of heat pumps, components and associated equipment. The Association influences legislation and other matters that affect the interests of either the industry in general, or its members in particular. In addition, the HPA co-ordinates technical and market research into areas of mutual interest, identified by members with the aim of improving market opportunities for members. The HPA recognises that heat pump technology will only fulfil its promise in the market if suppliers, installers and users fully appreciate their function and capabilities. A major objective of the association, therefore, is to raise awareness of heat pumps by informing prospective specifiers of their long-term benefits, reassuring end users and providing up-to-the-minute advice on the various systems available. The HPA creates this awareness through exhibitions, literature, promotions and public relations.

Unlike Ground Source Heat Pumps, Air Source Heat Pumps convert energy from the air and increase it to a higher temperature, using a process which is very much like a reversal refrigeration effect. For business units and larger areas including schools, hospitals and commercial buildings a set of air source heat pumps (air heat pumps) may be required along with a heat pump and pressurised hot water tank for ongoing water usage. These types of systems utilise no external pipes and most of the components reside as a unit just outside and within the building normally inside a small room (utility).

The air handling unit draws air across a water-anti freeze type solution which transfers energy into the refrigerant. When the refrigerant boils, the gases from reaction are compressed to produce temperatures in excess of 100°C. This is when the process is similar to a ground source heat pump.

Air source heat pumps can be used in many more applications including very large commercial projects where land space is restricted and also be utilised in conjunction with other emerging eco technologies such as underfloor heating, solar panels and wind turbines. Air Sourced Heat Pumps can also be used as a complete stand alone solution for room heating using the same distribution system as a ground source heat pump or a traditional system when implemented in a purpose built new build designed with this technology in mind. Air Sourced Heat Pumps are perfect for tight spaces and within an eco architectural design. Grants may be available with further information being found on our grants page on the website with Ground Heat Pumps.
